The Silverton has opened the Mermaid Restaurant & Lounge as part of its $150 million casino-wide expansion. The restaurant serves traditional American cuisine as well as original seafood accented dishes. It's located inside the connector between the casino and the new Bass Pro Shops and features a 117,000-gallon saltwater aquarium with 8,000 tropical fish of various species and hosts a live, hourly Mermaid show, performed by Olympic-medalist synchronized swimmers.

Ten mermaids and mermen, under the direction of Stephan Miermont, choreographer and aquatic consultant and coach for the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming teams, perform a free five to 10-minute show every hour from 5 to 11 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 3 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Silverton Casino Hotel Lodge is located just three miles south of the Strip, off I-15 at Blue Diamond Road.

This year, the non-gaming Alexis Park resort just off the Strip on Harmon Avenue that opened in 1984 was purchased for $62 million and the new owners also paid another $8 million to acquire a neighboring 206-unit apartment complex that sits on 10 acres.

Future plans call for a 1,500-room resort complex that will include a 28-story hotel tower, a 60,000-square-foot casino, restaurants, a health spa and meeting space to be built where the apartments now exist.

Meanwhile, the Alexis Park now called the Alexis Resort and Villas is being enhanced. The exterior facade, interior public area and grounds are being modernized. The furnishings in the resort's 500 suites are also being updated. Once the owners receive gaming approval, they will add 15 slot machines to the property's new lounge area.

Last month, the space once occupied by the Pegasus restaurant was reopened as the 375 Supper Club Lounge, a late-night dining and entertainment venue. By the end of January, the pool area will reopen and feature a sand beach, cabanas, fire pits, a bar and fiber-optic lighting.

A couple weeks ago the MGM Mirage announced their Project CItyCenter, now the next-door neighbor to the north is planning a hotel-condo-casino on an eight-acre parcel between Bellagio and the Boardwalk on the center Strip surrounding the Jockey Club timeshare building. The $1.5 billion mega-resort will be called the Cosmopolitan and have 2,400 hotel and condo-hotel rooms, a 70,000-square-foot casino, an 1,800-seat theater, and 300,000 square feet of restaurant, retail, and other entertainment space. Ground breaking is anticipated in early 2005, with an estimated completion date of late 2007.
