The year began with Penn & Teller emerging from a box filled with $1 million in quarters to celebrate their new home at the Rio. It also netted them two Emmy Award nominations for their Showtime series "Penn & Teller: Bullshit!" that has been renewed for the 2004 season.

These two "magicians who hate magic" are celebrating their first anniversary and indefinite gig in the Rio's Samba Theatre. Tickets for their 9 p.m. nightly except Tuesday shows are $65 plus tax, call 1-888-746-7784.

It's amazing when friends write a book and it's set in the town you know so well. The idea for "Dice Angel" came from a classified ad that ran for months in a local publication. A woman named Julie claimed to be able to bring gamblers luck. In the book, the colorful character ends up helping a likeable, in-spite-of-himself, bar owner who has everything going wrong in his life especially in the money department. The bar is loosely based on Johnny Mac's in Henderson.

Even the homeless guy in the book is based on a real person who gave the author, Brian Rouff, a stock tip one time that turned out to be IGT. At the time a share was $3 and Rouff didn't buy it. He claims that's why he's still working for a living.

"Dice Angel" is a fun, easy read with humor, interesting characters and the perfect setting... Las Vegas. The book is sold at some local bookstores and on Amazon.com. The author also says you can call him at 702-564-1665, and if you buy form him, he'll autograph the copy. Retail price is $14.95.

Steve Dacri, "the fastest hands in the world" is now performing his "Xtreme Close-Up Magic" in a new mini-showroom in Gustav Mauler's Sazio restaurant at The Orleans. He began a few months ago next door in the noisy Irish pub and has relocated to the tiny 40-seat, closed off private venue with two video screens, which is providing a perfect intimate setting for Las Vegas' only close-up magic show. A three course dinner with a choice of one of three entrees accompanies the performance that is extended to Dec. 31.

Dacri's shows, which include lots of video clips from his network television appearances, a roving "bunny" cam with the operator in a Playboy-like outfit, and some tricks presented by one or two fellow magicians, runs Friday through Monday at 8 p.m. The dinner show for all ages is $49.95 plus tax and gratuity and $34.95 for children under 10, call 702-365-7075
